How to make a Where the Wild Things Are costume?

Everything You Require:

A few yards of white furry fabric (how much you really want depends on how big your child)

Sharp scissors

A sweat-suit that fulfills your son or daughter (sweatshirt without a hood and sweat pants)

Safety hooks

White thread

Wolf or raccoon tail

Sturdy gold newspaper or felt

Double-sided tape

What To Do:

1.      Fold your furry fabric in half. Twist the sweatpants in two lengthwise so that the legs are directly ontop of each other, making one leg. Lay the folded pants in addition to the furry fabric in order that the outer seam of the pants is prearranged with the folded edge of the furry fabric. Cut your furry fabric along the sweat pants, from the waistband to the hem, using the sweatpants as a guide so that you have a leg cut out in fur. Repeat for your other leg. Match the center fold of the top into the fold of the cloth, putting the sweatshirt on top of the fabric, and then use the shirt as your guide for cutting the fur. Continue this process so that you have two halves of the sweatshirt in fur. (Tip: It won't matter whether your suit is a little baggy, therefore it's nice to cut  a little beyond your guide.)

2.      Now it is time to produce your fur suit! (You will no longer require the sweatsuit from that point on.)  Sew up the front and back seams, connecting both legs together to generate pants, but leave the top opening of their trousers alone.(You wont have to sew the exterior seams as you cut the cloth onto the fold.)

3.      Press the seams apart with a iron or with your fingers.

4.      Pin together the sleeves and sides of the top, and then stitch them together. Stitch the neckline and hem it to make it even, or you may simply even it out with scissors. Press the seams flat with your iron or with your fingers.

5.      Have your child try on the two pieces of the costume. Figure out where the top and underside should combine for your ideal fit and secure them together with safety pins. (This is the way you'll get the costume on and off.) You could also attach Velcro to the 2 parts to join them or sew them together and insert buttons down the backside.

6.      Pin your tail to the back of the costume.

7.      Now it is time to produce Max's hood. It's possible to make use of a hood from a sweatshirt or jacket to do this or just cut a hood free-hand so that it's semi-snug on your kid's head. Fold up the bottom inch of the hood, sew it and then slide a ribbon through it so it can tie under the chin, or simply leave it loose. Cut out two triangles for wolf ears and then sew them onto the top of the hood on each side of the head.

8.      You are almost done! Have your son or daughter use scissors to trim out a tall crown from the gold paper so that it will fit on his/her hooded head. Fasten the crown using double-sided tape.

You're done! All that is left to do is get your child to take his/her Max costume out for a spin on Halloween while he/she trick-or-treats the night away! If your son or daughter knows how to sew, then allow them to help sew a number of this costume themselves! For some additional inspiration, both you and your little one may go see the movie or read the book together!
